Ayurveda teaches us many different bodywork modalities, including oil massage called Abhyanga. Abyhanga is a Sanskrit word meaning “to rub the limbs”, usually with warm herbal oil. Abhyanga massage soothes, softens and lubricates the bodily tissues so that toxins are released. Abhyanga is the external application of therapeutic and rejuvenating natural oils with movements that respect the physiology or digestion, assimilation and elimination. The massage becomes a medium for divine grace and healing when the practitioner brings attention to their third eye and the moment-to-moment flow of their pranas. The skin is an organ of assimilation and elimination. It is a seven-level external organ that has a continuous relationship with the lining of the gastro-intestinal tract and internal organs.
Abhyanga is useful in maintaining immunity, nourishing various tissues of the body and cleansing impurities. It is also useful for stiffness, fatigue, constipation, dry skin, diseases of the nervous system, tremors, misalignment, osteoarthritis, improves lymphatic and cardiac circulation. Abyhanga relaxes the mind and promotes inner tranquility. When done properly, abhyanga can bring about feelings of calm acceptance and gratitude.
Expect to learn the basic concepts, theory and history of Ayurveda, but mostly this is a hands-on class where you will witness a full Abhyanga demonstration as well as be led through a guided practice of giving and receiving a treatment. Students will feel confident in giving this type of authentic, time-proven, ancient massage modality. It can be added to your current massage techniques or can be offered exclusively on its own. The medical science of Ayurveda recognizes the value of using warm, herbal-oil during massage because oil is lipophilic, meaning it will dissolve toxic, fat-like substances in the subcutaneous tissues, nourish the skin, remove impurities, stimulate both arterial and lymphatic circulation, and calm the central nervous system….all of this will promote a intense blissful sensation and abolish stress that has been stored in the body. To support flow of prana (vitality) in the body, abhyanga is done in a specific, ancient sequence based on terminal clearance and techniques that work at the chakra level as well as the physical levels.
Sacred Stone’s abhyanga massage begins by applying fresh lemon, salt, then oil to the soles of the feet. Then oil is applied to the crown of the head. Once these entrance/exit points (also known as terminal ends) are lubricated, the flow of prana and healing can begin. The rest of the sequence follows lines along the musculature and circles around the joints. This is a very comprehensive therapy, not designed for deep tissue work, but can be modified either way. Clients love this! Upon graduation, students will be certified in Ayurvedic Oil Massage (Abhyanga).
