Steam Tent Canopy
Steam Tent Canopy
Professionally hand-made by a long-time friend and colleague, this tent fits over a traditional massage table without any velcro or attachments needed because it’s weighted and sturdy. It is designed to induce sweating via steam using a steam pot where the heat travels up through a sleeve that is built into the tent. The fabric is strong and thick, preventing heat from escaping. This tent is very easy to clean and maintain. I have had mine for over 21 years nearly maintenance-free! My clients love it after a long relaxing oil massage or friction massage for exfoliation or anytime just as a service in and of itself.

I have been using this steam tent for about 21 years now and it still looks brand new. My clients love it. I love it for myself. Anyone can use it. It's excellent for massage therapists and Ayurvedic practitioners who want to perform swedhana therapy. It's very low maintenance. I use an environment-friendly cleaning spray and sponge. Most times the tent doesn't touch the skin of the client, keeping it extra clean. It's light and easy to put over a client on the table and it is sturdy enough not to need velcro for it to stay put. I have steamed men as tall as 6 ft 3" in this tent. Use it before or after massage to melt toxins in your client's body, relax, and soften their muscles while metabolizing fat more quickly.
What is Swedhana Therapy? An ancient healing therapy based on the science of Ayurveda, which induces perspiration by heating the body’s core temperature. Swedhana Therapy is a form of thermo-therapy, using steam to support detoxification, remove impurities, and melt toxins within the body by releasing them more readily into the gastrointestinal tract and encouraging elimination.
Prior to Swedhana Therapy, the client should receive an oil massage or dry brushing. A choice of lavender, lemon, amber, juniper, and eucalyptus essential oils can be used in the steam as well as those can be added to the massage oil.
Swedhana Therapy ignites the digestive fire, the metabolic fire within each cell, while supporting the immune system. Swedhana Therapy brings deep relaxation, removes stress, and crystallized negative emotions.
My tent is made out of recycled sailcloth called stamoid, a marine grade, waterproof and mildew resistant, vinyl-like fabric. The tent is six feet long and fits over standard massage tables. The tail at the end of the tent is a 16" diameter circular tube that fits around the steam pot. The steam rises through the tail and circulates the steam evenly inside the tent. The tent is foldable and fits into a carry bag. The bag, steam pot, rods, online instructional DVD, and manual are included.

The steampot is simple, effective, safe, but nothing fancy. Just turn it on high, put the tent sleever over it, wait 10 minutes and the steam will begin to fill the tent effortlessly without a fan. There is no need for a thermometer if you are monitering your client properly. If your client's nose and ears start to turn red, it's time to take them out! Always ask your client how they feel. The tent can instantly be lifted off the table and a rush of cool air will refresh your client immediately. You can pass a towel or sheet through the neck of the tent so they are draped properly before you remove the tent. Full instructions are in the online manual that it comes with, as well as the online DVD. The DVD demonstrates a dry skin brushing (garshana) prior to the steam therapy.
There is an infinite amount of possible therapies that can be done with this tent, anywhere from salt glows, mud wraps, body pastes, oil massage and more.
Add herbs and essential oils to the steampot for additional sensation and therapeutic effect! Ask us about our custom made table cover. It is made of the same fabric as the tent and will protect your linens and massage table from the steam. I have found that if you use it only a few times per week, you do not need the table cover. If you plan to use it all the time, you will need one. The table cover is made with rounded edges that snuggly fit your table with a string adjuster. I will email you a secure order form should you wish to purchase the table cover.
Our tent is easy to put together when it arrives and easy to take apart if you want to travel with it. It comes in a variety of lovely colors as well. Allow 6 weeks for shipping as most of them are custom made with precision and care

Definition of Swedhana Therapy: A healing therapy inducing sweat by heating the body’s core temperature. SAMA’s form of swedhana therapy uses a specially designed, portable tent canopy sauna that fits directly over the massage table. Swedhana Therapy is a form of thermo-therapy. In this case, we are using steam to induce perspiration and detoxification. Swedhana Therapy removes impurities and melts toxins within the body so that they move more readily into the gastrointestinal tract, supporting elimination. Prior to Swedhana Therapy, the client should receive oil massage or dry brushing. Lavender, lemon, amber, juniper and eucalyptus used in base of sesame oil are a safe choice. Swedhana Therapy ignites digestive fire, metabolic fire and the immune system of all the cells within the body. Swedhana Therapy brings deep relaxation, removes stress and crystallized negative emotions. Swedhana Therapy should be personalized according to the client’s emotional and physical current doshic constitution by a professional.
Five methods that facilitate swedhana:
1. Ushma Baspa (Steam) Use with: Eucalyptus, ginger, sandalwood, mint, herbal teas, herbal oils, sauna bath, steam box, steam tent.
2. Drava (Liquid) Examples: Hot tub, hot shower, hot mineral bath, pouring of warm oil, baking soda, ginger powder.
3. Tapas (Fire/heat) Examples: Hot Item, sitting near a fire, lying on hot sand, lying on hot rocks, hot stone therapy.
4. Upanaha (Poultice) Use with: Calamus root, hot black pepper, cloves, mustard seed, castor oil, maha herbal massage.
5. Anagni (Fireless) Examples: Warm closed rooms, warm clothes, warm blanket, rubbing/vibrator, fasting/thirsting, sunning, drinking hot teas, using hot herbs, induced fear/anger, running.
The most common use of swedhana is the steam tent. Herbs and detoxifying oils are used according to the person’s dosha. The herbs and oils should also be chosen to heighten the profuseness of swedan and at the same time, help balance the needs of the dosha of your client.
